An introduction to Qatar

(Map of Qatar)

The State of Qatar is a sovereign and independent state in the Middle East, occupying a small peninsula in the Arab Gulf. Its sole land border is with Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf.

Dominated by the Al Thani family for almost 150 years, the country was a British protectorate until 1971, when it declared its independence. His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani assumed the role of Emir when his father, HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani abdicated in June 2013.

Qatar has a small population (1.9 million, UN 2012) and the majority live in the capital city, Doha.

Although one of the smaller Gulf States, Qatar’s burgeoning economy boasts ample opportunities for foreign investment.
